Hiking the Appalachian Trail: My 90-Day Journey & the Half Gallon Challenge (2026)

Veto's Appalachian Trail Journey: A Personal Reflection

I'm halfway done with my 2200-mile trek along the Appalachian Trail, and it's an incredible feeling! I've completed 1100 miles in 6 states, and the journey is both physically and mentally challenging, but it's all worth it. I'm grateful for the support and camaraderie along the way, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you.

One of the highlights of my journey was the half-gallon ice cream challenge at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Pennsylvania. It's a tradition where hikers eat a half-gallon of ice cream to celebrate reaching the halfway point. I was proud to complete my challenge in just 16 minutes and join the exclusive Half Gal Club. It's a fun way to celebrate and a great way to push myself.

Virginia was a challenging but rewarding state to hike. I didn't suffer from the Virginia blues, and once my toe and other aches and pains improved, I was able to cruise through the state. However, I spent most of my time hiking alone due to the norovirus outbreak, which dominated my thoughts and affected many hikers. I enjoyed the easy terrain and stops at Waysides, where I could resupply and enjoy hot meals.

Shenandoah National Park was a highlight, with its stunning views and pleasant weather. I loved the panoramic vistas and the feeling of being surrounded by nature. The park's blackberry milkshakes were a delightful treat, albeit a bit expensive.

The rollercoaster section in West Virginia was a welcome challenge after the easy terrain of Virginia. It reminded me of the early days of my hike, with its numerous PUDs (pointless ups and downs). It was a great reminder that the AT doesn't take the easy route, and I was happy to complete it.

Reaching the 1000-mile mark was a significant milestone, and I celebrated with trail magic and hot chili. Harpers Ferry, the unofficial halfway point, was an awesome historical site, and I enjoyed the AT running through town. I spent the night at a hostel and met new people, which was a nice change from my antisocial era.

Maryland was an easy state to hike through, with well-maintained trails and friendly people. I enjoyed the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club's efforts in managing the state's portion of the trail. I made some new friends and hiked with them, which kept things interesting.

Looking ahead, I'm excited to hike with my sister in Pennsylvania and explore New England. I'm aware that the trail is not always boring, and I need to keep living in the present to enjoy the experience. I'm grateful for the support and camaraderie along the way, and I'm looking forward to the challenges and rewards that lie ahead.

I hope you enjoyed my reflections on my Appalachian Trail journey. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences and inspire others to embark on their own adventures.
